Whilst at work today, I have had about 4 different conversations with the opening line “my contact is up for renewal and I need a new phone, what should I get?”.
I always ask, what do you want it to do - and 3 times out of today’s 4, they have said, “exactly what my old one does”.
ARGH!!!!
“Why change the phone if it still does what you need it to?” I ask. “Erm…” they say.
I like shiney new things, and a phone is one of the coolest new toys you can have, but why try to fix what is not broke??
Remeber the early days of mobile phones, when the “upgrades” included which handset had more options for changable covers?! Tigger or cars or patterns or naked ladies - whatever cover you could get decided what phone you chose.
And I quite liked that choice. I don’t think there is a new phone on the market you can customise (case wise) these days.
But the internal customisation seems limitless! I love the little spirit level on the iPod - I don’t need it in any way, shape or form, but it’s nifty.
But my inner chav sometimes says I should get a phone that I can put a Tigger case on…

I was digging through a drawer the other day and came accross a phone I bought around 4/5 years ago. It was the Samsung P510.
For those of you that don’t know this little phone, it had an automatic flip on it - press a button on the side, and the clamshell opens up and I bought the P510 purely for this little feature!.
I remember getting chased around my car when a friend saw it, and wanted to play with the phone. I said a phone was not a toy and refused to hand it over, they started to chase me, and a hilarious scene of stop and start, chase ensued, complete with onstant changing directions. I think I fell over laughing and handed the phone over.
Anyway, it as it was such a gimmicky reason to buy a phone, but I was thinking about why I like a phone now. I usually decide based on how many things it can do - faster internet, GPS, camera, etc etc.
How times have changed! Mobile phones when they first came out were all about calls and texts, then cameras, and music then internet. The most advanced thing you could do with them then was buy a different cover!
Oh, and remember the “latest” polyphonic ringtones?! How bad were they? I actually spent £2.50 buying a Britney Spears track for it. Once I’d charged the phone and listened to it… oh dear!
What a way we have come. I wonder what our phones will do in another 5 years…?

Believe or not, but the most expensive handset on the market at the moment (excluding the Sony Black Diamond), is not a new device, and it doesn’t have flashy camera or any up to date features.
It is in fact a Nokia 1110.
Yes, that is right - a Nokia 1110!
The reason appears to be because some hackers believe that by getting hold of this handset (which is no longer made or sold by Nokia), it has the ability to intercept SMS and calls. The crazy logic behind this is that these hackers think that the device is made in such a way that it can be easily used to clone another device, thereby giving them access to the info on the cloned device.
Scary stuff huh? I keep everything on my phone – if it went walkies, someone could have everything about me (it’s all password protected, but…)
It’s a bizarre rumor, especially because we know that all the information sent via SMS is encoded and only readable by the recipient – cloned phones don’t get the real info being sent as they don’t have the right SIM details for the CTN (Cellular Telephone Number). So as far as I can see, the people who fork out all the cash for the 1110 still will not have the SIM card to grab the information, and the codes are normally stuck to a time limit as well (so if it’s not on the correct CTN/CIM in a certain time, bye-bye message).
Nokia have confirmed there is no option to be able to do this. And the mobile watchdog is looking into it - just to be on the safe side.
The Nokia 1110 is currently selling for 11 (yes, that’s ELEVEN) times its weight in gold, which is at a cost of around 25,000 euro.

I’ll confess it now – I love having the internet on my C902! Do I use it for anything important? Well, yes! Social media is very much in the “now”, and I try to keep up to date.
However, I do have a lessening addiction with Facebook; all the hoops it makes us jump through to use the “just for fun” applications… why do 15 of my friends have to be pestered or tagged into something before I can find out “what my colour is”? Grr!!
But when my Techno-phobic sister started asking about social media sites to keep in touch with the family, I knew it was getting pretty big! I recommended Facebook, and got her using it on her phone, the N95.
One cool thing about Facebook is that it got my sister into online tarot cards. She has always gone to see Spiritualists and Mediums, seeing numerous Advisors to see what different things they say. She tended to visit the ones that offer the free readings as an introductory offer, and only went back if they got things right. But from Facebook, she decided to look around for what the internet could offer, so after a bit of a Google search, she found an amazing amount of sites that can do readings and stuff over the phone! She’s pleased she can now pester people from all over the UK – but still get a free psychic reading!
What will your mobile can lead you to next?!

Whilst playing with a work colleagues brand new iPhone 3G, i couldnt help but notice that within the 2 hour time period he had the phone for, there was already a multitude of applications that have been preloaded on there.
I couldnt help but notice that they were all entertainment applications. One such program was a virtual piano. I cant really see the point of that one. I mean where would you see fit to use that, other than show off the touch screen technology and even on that point i have to say that it wasnt the most responsive of displays.

One site that has become really popular in the community is willitblend.com famous for putting all types of electronic devices into blenders and not one to date has escaped its sharp blades.
The marketing idea behind the website is to promote the Blendtec super blenders. A very inventive viral campaign indeed. Sometimes you can’t help think, what a waste of money, but what fun they must have doing it.
So what is to be of the iPhone 3G? As the first gen phone blended relatively easily you can expect this one to be just as quick.
